Sunrise Broadband Group, Inc. (sbbd.pk)
Telecommunications
- Room for Growth: At the moment, there is still tremendous room for growth into the rural markets. At the end of 2004, approximately 67% of TV households in the U.S. had access to a basic cable service (Source: IBISWorld). The U.S. now lags behind in the Internet revolution, trailing no less than 15 other nations in the number of high-speed Internet subscribers per capita. Approximately 10% of Americans were continuously connected to the Internet in 2005, compared to 25% of South Koreans (Source: Mergent).
- Growing Demand: In 2005, broadband connection for the first time became the preferred means of Internet access in the U.S. (Source: Mergent). In addition, the U.S. broadcasting and cable TV market grew by 4.2% in 2003 to reach a value of $115 billion, and is forecast to have a value of $144.2 billion by 2008, an increase of 25.3% from 2003 (Source: Datamonitor). As cable television services are increasingly associated with other bundled services such as telephony, interactive TV, and broadband Internet access, new growth is possible through recurring revenue derived from telephony, cable modem and other interactive services available through digital cable.
- Achieving a Foothold: Sunrise has identified six cable systems representing approximately 38,000 subscribers across Kentucky, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Company projections estimate first year revenues of approximately $20 million and earnings of $6.4 million from these combined acquisitions. The company has already committed $2 million to complete necessary upgrades at the first two cable systems in round one and combined has committed $5.3 million in all of the six acquisitions.
- Integration and Expansion: One of the significant features of broadband access is the rapidly growing list of services that are dependent upon broadband access, including Voice-over-Internet-Protocol, Video-on-Demand, streaming audio and video, and others, making exponential growth possible. For example, VOIP Magazine predicts US residential VoIP subscribers will grow to between 2.8 million and 6.7 million by the end of 2005, and major player Skype recently announced more than 100 million subscribers to its service, more people than the populations of all but 13 countries in the world. This explosion is occurring in just one of the sectors dependent upon broadband access, indicating some of the possibilities inherent in the Sunrise business model.
