Protection has its price
January 22, 2008
On March 16, 2006, the White House released its National Security Strategy (NSS), in which the express purpose was to ensure the fulfillment of its most solemn obligation: to protect the security of the American people. As a result of this commitment, tens of billions of dollars have been allotted to various aspects of the Homeland Security sector, spelling huge potential rewards for the companies in position to efficiently and effectively service the nation's security needs. From Sept. 11, 2001 to 2006, Congress appropriated nearly $207 billion to combat terrorism, and total homeland security spending in 2006 was estimated to be at least $50 billion (Source: San Francisco Chronicle). Market research firm Homeland Security Research predicts that homeland security industry spending will grow to $170 billion per year by 2015 (Source: Forbes.com).
In this huge and growing market, Universal Detection Technology, Inc. (OTCBB: UDTT) develops, markets and distributes a wide array of products intended to combat the growing global threat of terrorism. From sophisticated surveillance equipment to cutting-edge airborne pathogen, radiation, and bioterrorism detection, Universal Detection Technology offers solutions for a broad range of terrorist threats. The Company’s BSM-2000 bacterial spore detection system, for instance, was developed in conjunction with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and provides constant, unattended monitoring of the air for presence of abnormal levels of bacterial spores such as anthrax. In addition, Universal Detection is already providing anthrax detection kits to the U.S. Army. The Company has also sold 2 units of its BSM-2000 to the Government of the United Kingdom. As terrorists have become more sophisticated in producing biological weapons, it is critical to remain vigilant and aggressive in keeping our nation safe with use of advanced technologies, and Universal Detection Technology is committed to developing products to keep innocent people safe both at home and abroad.
The current environment is filled with threats of attacks with weapons of mass destruction with biological warfare agents being among top fears. In 2004 a study done by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University concluded that early detection, and not pre-exposure vaccination, is the key to limiting an outbreak of anthrax. It is only prudent to be proactive, and this applies not only at home but also abroad. It is not only U.S. citizens who need protection from international terrorism, and Universal Detection Technology has partners across the globe, including those who distribute the Company’s products and technologies in Italy, the Middle East, China, and Singapore. Universal Detection Technology also has continued to develop advanced solutions with such partners as NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratories to meet the heavy demands as the Department of Homeland Security continues to fund anti-bioterrorism devices for municipalities, counties, states, and federal agencies.
The benefits and innovative solutions of Universal Detection Technology have sparked interest both domestically and abroad. Universal Detection Technology recently announced that the patent for the Company's Anthrax Detection technology used in its BSM-2000 system was granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In December of 2007, the Company announced that it had received a new purchase order from Security Solutions International (SSI) for UDTT's anthrax detection kits. SSI plans to showcase the kits at upcoming seminars and conferences where SSI professionals provide counter-terrorism training and education to members of law enforcement and representatives from U.S. Army and various other security and emergency response agencies. Also in December, the Company announced that it had received an order from Gulf Security Solutions (GSS) to supply counter-WMD education, training and products. The contract includes detection items, threat assessment and response planning to various WMD threats.
